Data Science Club Website

The Data Science Club (DSC) is the largest MathSoc club at UWaterloo. We host a variety of educational and networking events, such as ML Paper Reading Groups, Data Science Workshops (with Wat.ai), and company Q&A sessions. We also host CxC, a yearly datathon in the winter term with 300+ participants and $20,000+ in prizes.

VP CxC (F25)

My 4th (and 5th) term at DSC will be a leadership role! I’m really excited to be organizing the CxC hackathon with the club, and I’ve already been involved with parts of the process like securing the venue, talking with potential sponsors, and hiring the executive team.

Project Lead & Data Science Mentor (S25)

This term I lead a survey initiative, where we explored the ā€œbirdiestā€ courses across all undergraduate departments. We advertised the survey at every DSC event and also on social media, and then processed the +200 submissions. We used stratified sampling and clustering to compare across different faculties and years, and finally created a ā€œBirdiness Indexā€ to clearly represent the general consensus for each course. It was a rewarding process and I learned a lot about applying these statistical techniques onto data to create real insights.

Additionally, I mentored numerous students who were looking for advise regarding breaking into the industry, and ways that they can go to sharpen their skills. I don’t claim to be an expert but I did help a lot of first-years decide if they think data science is right for them, and directed them to some good introductory learning resources.

Development (F24, W25)

I helped create an entirely new membership system that allows paid club members to access an account with a unique QR-code, increasing the check-in efficiency at our larger events, such as the Beginning of Term social or CxC. I added REST API endpoints to return singular and multiple QR-codes, and also updated the website to display new executive members and upcoming events. Specifically for CxC, I set up an internal pipeline tool to print out hacker tags with the unique QR-codes onto lanyard cards

As my first major involvement with a school club, I’ve come to realize that it’s very difficult to balance club work with school, but seeing the impact of what I do is so worthwhile. It’s also a great way to connect with peers and people older than me, and the social aspect will definitely keep me coming back.
